The Light Work gallery, located at 316 Waverly Ave., will host a lecture by Lacy Austin, director of community programs at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York City, on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 5:30 p.m. The lecture will take place in Watson Theater. It is free and open to the public. Parking is available in SU pay lots.
ICP's award-winning community partnerships focus on collaborations with schools, community centers and other cultural institutions. Their goal is to teach photography in the community at large as a way to foster self-esteem, communication skills, professional experience and community revitalization. During her lecture, Austin will profile ICP's most recent collaborations, including the Community Record School Partnerships, ICP at the Point, Re-Visions of El Barrio and the Portable Digital Darkroom.
Austin's visit is part of an ongoing collaborative project exploring literacy, community and photography. The project began in Fall 2005 at Light Work, and includes lectures, workshops, exhibitions and community-based photographic projects. The project is the result of a committee of faculty, staff, students, artists and Syracuse City School teachers from across disciplines who have been meeting regularly to program events and stimulate a dialogue in the local community.
Austin's lecture is funded by Light Work, the Partnership for Better Education, the College of Visual and Performing Arts and the Goldring Arts Journalism Program in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
