Brooks Haxton and Michael Burkard, faculty members in Syracuse University's Creative Writing Program, will sign copies of their newly released books at the SU Bookstore, located in the Schine Student Center, beginning at 4 p.m. April 4.
Haxton's newest release, "Fragments: The Collected Wisdom of Heraclitus" (Viking Penguin, 2001), was featured in a recent issue of Time magazine. His other books of poetry include "Traveling Company" (Alfred Knopf, 1989), "Dead Reckoning" (Story Line Press, 1989) and "Dominion" (Alfred Knopf, 1986). His collection of translations from ancient Greek, "Dances for Flute and Thunder" (Viking Penguin), was released in 1999.
His poems have appeared in Paris Review, Partisan Review, Atlantic Monthly and elsewhere. He has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Ingram Merrill Foundation.
Haxton is a professor and director of the M.F.A. Program in Creative Writing in The College of Arts and Sciences.
Burkard, an assistant professor in the Creative Writing Program, recently released "Unsleeping" (Sarabande, 2001) and "Pennsylvania Collection Agency" (New Issues Press, 2001). His other works include "Entire Dilemma" (Sarabande , 1998), "My Secret Boat" (Norton, 1990) and "Fictions From the Self" (Norton, 1988).
He is a recipient of a Whiting Writers' Award, the Poetry Society's Alice Fay di Castagnola Award, two grants from the New York State Foundation for the Arts, and prizes from American Poetry Review.
