David C. Smith, vice president of enrollment management at Syracuse University, has been named to the Chancellor's Cabinet.

Smith recently completed his 33nd year of service at the University. His responsibilities include direction and oversight of a wide range of University offices, including Undergraduate Admissions, Financial Aid and Scholarship Programs, Enrollment Management Research, Registrar, Graduate Enrollment Management Center and SU Abroad. He is also responsible for coordinating the University's relationship with Army and Air Force ROTC.

Smith has also served as Chancellor Nancy Cantor's emissary to the Haudenosaunee Nations, helping to facilitate the University's expanding collaborations in matters related to Native people. Smith has been involved in implementing the Haudenosaunee Promise scholarships, which have been successful in greatly increasing the number of Haudenosaunee students at SU.

"David is one of the pillars of Syracuse University, with more than 33 years of experience, expertise and knowledge about our campus and our community," says Cantor. "At the same time, he is a nationally recognized expert and leader in the field of enrollment management and college planning. I look forward to working with him even more closely as a member of my Cabinet and benefiting from his advice and wisdom."

"I am delighted to join the Chancellor's Cabinet and to be an active participant in the development of SU's vision -- Scholarship in Action," Smith says. "My appointment, I believe, validates the key role enrollment management expects to play in the exciting times that lie just ahead. On a personal level, I am most appreciative of the Chancellor's confidence in me to assist in this way."

Smith served, prior to his current assignment, in various capacities at SU in admissions and financial aid, including assistant dean, associate dean and dean of admissions and financial aid, and also as director of financial aid. Before arriving at Syracuse, he had been on the admission staffs at Clarkson University and Utica College.

Smith received the Chancellor's Citation for Outstanding Service in 1998. He was a selection committee member for the National Merit Scholarship from 2000 to 2004 and is a member of the College Board, the National Association of College Admissions Counselors and various other professional organizations.

He has authored numerous papers and articles on a range of subjects related to enrollment management and college planning. He has frequently commented in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and other national and regional publications. He has appeared occasionally on national and regional television to offer points of view on matters concerning college admissions and student financial aid. Smith has also consulted for many other institutions on admission and financial aid programs.

Smith holds a bachelor of arts degree in English from Utica College.
