The Point of Contact Gallery, a distinctive new space for the visual arts located at 914 E. Genesee St., will present "Dialogues & Solos" beginning Friday, Oct. 13. A collaborative exhibition of contemporary photography, collage and installation by Latin American artists Liliana Porter and Ana Tiscornia, the show runs through Dec. 15. An opening reception with the artists will be held Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, noon-2 p.m. and 3-5 p.m., or by appointment.
Since Porter last presented her prints and paintings at Syracuse University in the 1990s show "Crossing Boundaries," the world-renowned Argentine artist has continued to explore and grow into new dimensions in photography and installation art. Her figurines, toys and characters are social, down-to-earth human creations made in society's image and likeness.
Born in Uruguay, Tiscornia was a witness-participant of Latin America's recent painful history. Her world is made of digitalized photography intermingled with maps, fragmented objects, rolled pieces of paper and leftovers. She uses broken sequences -- what the public would recall as broken sequences, broken at some critical point in our imagery, in our memory.
Porter's art is philosophical and related to recurrent questions, while Tiscornia's is political and related to current events. According to the artists' statement accompanying the exhibition, "We do not pretend to erase that diversity, but to use it as material for the new constructions. What we want is for the fusion of both languages to give birth to a narrative that could be for all intents and purposes fictional and mysterious, where the visual ambiguity opens new ways of interpretation and uncovers unexpected conflicts."
Point of Contact Gallery was established by Carole Brzozowski, dean of Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts, and is a component of the increasing art presence throughout the city that is being supported by the University community. Point of Contact, a nonprofit organization based at SU, is dedicated to the exploration of the verbal and visual arts, and is the generator of various literary publications and artistic events that include the Syracuse International Film and Video Festival, international art exhibits, theater events, academic symposiums, poetry readings and cross-cultural exchanges.
