"So what do you plan on doing with your life?" Syracuse University's Career Services Network aims to help students answer that question with the Fall 2006 Career Fair. The event takes place Wednesday, Oct. 11, from 1:30-6 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. More than 156 internationally recognized organizations will be in attendance seeking students for full-time positions and internships, making this the largest career fair in recent SU history.
"Career Fair is a unique opportunity available to Syracuse University students," says Debi Walker, assistant director at the Center for Career Services. "Finding a job after graduation can be an intimidating experience, but utilizing Career Services has been the first step to landing many of our students their dream jobs."
While the Career Fair boasts hundreds of potential jobs and the opportunity to interact with a number of employers, there is more to recruitment than activities at the Dome. "To get the most out of their Career Fair experiences, students must do a little prep work," says Walker.
One of the most popular preparatory events is Resumes Gone Wild. On Oct. 6, 9 and 10, from noon-3:30 p.m., Career Services will team up with actual employers such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Target Distribution and Morgan Stanley to help review resumes in preparation for the day at the Dome. This is the prime chance for students to get first-hand advice on how to make their experiences stand out on paper and in a crowd.
PricewaterhouseCoopers, the fair's platinum sponsor, will present a "How to Succeed at Career Fair" workshop on Thursday, Oct. 5, and Target Distribution will host the final "How to Succeed at Career Fair" seminar Monday, Oct. 9, at 5 p.m. in the Jabberwocky Cafe. These events allow students to learn networking tips before they actually meet with their ideal employer.
Career Services offers a number of year round programs and services separating Syracuse students from the crowd in this increasingly competitive global marketplace. Resume reviews, mock interviews, career advising, networking, and negotiating are just some of the resources available at the Career Center, located in Room 235 of the Hildegarde and J. Myer Schine Student Center. The University also provides students with one of the most up-to-date recruiting Web sites, OrangeLink, directly connecting them to thousands of potential employers.
