As part of the 2006-07 season of Syracuse University's Pulse, the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra (SSO) will present a free concert Monday, Oct. 16, at 8 p.m. in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium, Crouse College. No tickets are required. Free parking is available in Irving Garage.
The orchestra will appear under the direction of SSO music director Daniel Hege. Malcolm Bilson will perform on fortepiano. Selections include Mozart's "Piano Concerto No. 12 in A Major, K. 414" and Schumann's "Symphony No. 4 in D Minor, Op. 120."
The concert will also include a work by composer Ernst Bacon (1898-1990) titled "Remembering Ansel Adams." A recipient of three Guggenheim Fellowships and a Pulitzer Award, Bacon was dean of SU's then-School of Music from 1945-47 and remained at SU as composer in residence until 1963. Among the American artists who influenced him was his lifelong friend, famed photographer Ansel Adams. Bacon and Adams met in the 1920s and shared a love of music and mountaineering, along with a passionate concern for the environment. The grandeur and rugged beauty that Adams captured so eloquently in the light and shadow of his photographs is reflected in the tones of Ernst's elegy "Remembering Ansel Adams."
Pulse provides SU students and the Central New York community with opportunities to attend and participate in programs, performances, exhibitions and events in the visual and performing arts. It is a collaborative project of SU's Division of Student Affairs and College of Visual and Performing Arts.
Pulse is now hosting weekly podcasts on its website,
http://pulse.syr.edu, and will feature a preview of the SSO performance Oct. 12-17. Graduate students in the Goldring Arts Journalism Program in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications produce the podcasts.
