Author and former World Health Organization (WHO) nutrition expert James Akre will share insights on the benefits of breastfeeding during a lecture titled "How Can We Become a Breastfeeding Culture?" Thursday, Sept. 21, at 11 a.m. in Room 102 of the Hall of Languages. A strong proponent of breastfeeding, Akre explores the topic in his latest book, "The Problem with Breastfeeding: A Personal Reflection" (Hale Publsihing, 2006).
With 30 years of experience in various agencies within the United Nations, Akre recently retired from the WHO's Department of Nutrition, where he served as a technical writer and advisor on the full spectrum of human nutrition. He helped draft and promote the implementation of the International Code of Marketing Breast-milk Substitutes; the joint WHO/UNICEF Stement on Breastfeeding and the Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding.
