Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes has cancelled his April 14 engagement to appear as a University Lecturer. The University Lectures engagement is one of a number of U.S. appearances cancelled by Mr. Fuentes in protest against U.S. actions in Iraq.

Fuentes, regarded as one of Latin America's most distinguished literary figures, was to have lectured on the subject of "The Creative Spirit as a Force of Humanism." While respecting his decision to withdraw from this program, the University regrets not being able to bring the voice of Carlos Fuentes and his perspective on contemporary society to our students and faculty, particularly in this time of international crisis.
