Graduate students in SU's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications write down information about a "disaster" that has just taken place at the College Place bus stop. Dozens of police officers, firefighters, paramedics and FBI agents converged on the bus stop on the morning of July 31 to participate in a mock disaster exercise for 85 graduate students.
The student reporters were assigned to cover a serious car accident with injuries and fatalities. After a round of interviews with witnesses and two press briefings, it was revealed that an investigation into suspected methamphetamine traffickers culminated in the crash. The students then returned to their classrooms to submit their stories on deadline. This is the eighth year that NEWS 605 faculty have staged the mock disaster exercise.
