Important alternate routes to Syracuse University for Commencement, Sunday, May 14

For those traveling to the Carrier Dome for the Syracuse University/SUNY ESF Commencement exercises on Sunday, May 14, the following alternate routes are provided to help avoid delays due to the lane restriction on I-81 South.


Travelers are encouraged to allow one and a half hours of travel time from within the local Syracuse area due to expected traffic congestion. In the event that the University needs to issue emergency traffic messages on Sunday morning, they will be aired on Syracuse's WAER-FM (88.3).


I-81 South to the Syracuse University Campus (alternate to marked detour)


  • I-81 South
  • Exit I-81 South at Hiawatha Blvd. (Exit 23A)
  • On the exit ramp, get into the middle lane; proceed straight through the traffic light onto N. Salina St.
  • Continue on Salina St. for 2.3 miles through the heart of downtown Syracuse
  • Turn left at traffic light onto E. Adams St. (first left after Harrison St.)
  • Go up the hill past University Hospital
  • Turn right at traffic light onto Irving Ave.
  • Take Irving Ave. to the Carrier Dome


I-690 West to the Syracuse University Campus


  • I-690 West
  • Exit 690 West at the Teall Ave. Exit 14 (next exit after Midler Ave.)
  • Turn left onto Teall Ave.
  • Turn right onto Erie Blvd. (2nd traffic light)
  • Proceed on Erie Blvd. through four traffic lights
  • Just beyond 4th light, turn left onto University Ave. (no light)
  • Turn left onto Harrison St. (3rd traffic light)
  • Take immediate right turn into the University Avenue Garage
  • Walk to Carrier Dome or take shuttle bus to main campus (near Carrier Dome)


I-690 East to the Syracuse University Campus (marked detour)


  • I-690 East
  • Exit 690 East at West St. (Exit 11)
  • Bear left over the bridge
  • Continue on West St. past Fayette St. and get into the left-hand lane
  • Turn left onto Shonnard St. (the next left after Seymour St.)
  • Get into the middle lane and continue on Shonnard St. until Shonnard becomes E. Adams St.
  • E. Adams St. will take you under the I-81 overpass and past University Hospital
  • Turn right at traffic light onto Irving Ave.
  • Take Irving Ave. to the Carrier Dome


Note: If Irving Ave. becomes too congested, cars may be directed to go straight on E. Adams St. to the University Avenue Garage where shuttle buses will be available.
