May 11, 2006, marks the 25th anniversary of the passing of internationally known reggae legend Bob Marley. To celebrate the life and work of the music icon and cultural leader, the Department of African American Studies in The College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University will host a cultural afternoon at the Community Folk Art Center /Paul Robeson Performing Arts Company facility at 805 E. Genesee St. on Friday, May 12, from 6-9 p.m.
The event will feature music, poetry and a presentation by SU African American studies professor Horace Campbell, author of "Rasta and Resistance" (Africa World Press, 1987). Featured artists will include Bill Cole, Omani Abdullah, Kheli Willets, Asomgyee Pamoja and Micere Githae Mugo, chair of the Department of African American Studies. Adam Banks, assistant professor in SU's Writing Program, will give a poetry reading and offer remarks on Marley.
Also participating will be local poets Ras Howard Henry and members of the Twelve Tribe Community, and local musicians Jah Eyes and One Black Voice.
The event is free and open to the public. Organizers extend a special welcome to the families of graduating seniors who will be in town for Commencement weekend.
Caribbean food and refreshments will be provided. Free parking is available at the Syracuse Stage lot on Irving Avenue.
