Students from several Syracuse City Public Schools will visit Syracuse University Friday, April 28, for a half-day of learning about future careers, business, music and communications as part of a variety of year-long programs run by SU students.
The students attend Blodgett Elementary School, Huntington School, Shea Middle School and Henninger High School. They will start their day by meeting with Gregory Victory, associate director of career services. The students will then attend an organ recital by SU Organist Christopher Marks, followed by lunch with a group of SU athletes. The day will end with a meeting with Melvin T. Stith, dean of the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, and a tour of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
"We are excited to host so many Syracuse City School District students on campus as a culmination of several year-long mentoring programs," says Roberta Gillen, assistant director of Literacy Initiatives in SU's Mary Ann Shaw Center for Public and Community Service. "These collaborations are important for both the SU and city school students. We all learn so much."
The students' visit is sponsored by several SU/SCSD partnership programs, including the "Dream Project," organized through the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs; and "Balancing the Books" and "Lead 2 Succeed," organized through the Whitman School and the Mary Ann Shaw Center for Public and Community Service.
