As part of a month-long celebration of "Gaypril" events, noted author, playwright and performance artist Kate Bornstein will offer her unique insights on gender and sexuality in a performance April 21 at 7 p.m. in Gifford Auditorium in Huntington Beard Crouse Hall.
This autobiographical, signature performance -- "Kate Bornstein: On Men, Women and the Rest of Us" -- has been characterized as "postmodern gender 101 with a comic twist." In part modeled after her premier book, "Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women, and the Rest of Us" (Routledge, 1994), this performance will include Bornstein's engaging commentary on the trappings of an either/or, male/female gender binary system.
Jennifer Spinner, a senior women's studies and policy studies major and president of the undergraduate LGBT student organization Pride Union, looks forward to Bornstein coming to campus. "Kate Bornstein will be the perfect finale to a productive year," Spinner says. "Kate's performance is smart and sassy and will have you rethinking everything you've learned about gender."
Bornstein's visit is made possible by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center, Pride Union and a UEncounter grant funded through the Division of Student Affairs. Her 90-minute performance is open to the public, with free tickets available at the Schine Box Office. Free parking is available in the Quad 1 lot.
