The Syracuse University Communications Law & Policy Society will host the First Annual Communications Law and Policy Symposium April 22 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in Room 200 of MacNaughton Hall. The symposium, co-sponsored by the Convergence Center at SU's School of Information Studies, will offer an overview of communications law, as well as discussions of two of today's most important communications law issues: Internet policy and video franchising. The keynote speaker is Mary Cotter, president of Time Warner Cable's Syracuse Division.
The one-day event provides participants with the opportunity to talk to experts in the field of communications law and includes a panel discussion on careers in communications law, a panel discussion of state and federal powers in the field and a "current state of the industry" presentation.
In addition to Cotter, speakers include representatives from Charter Communications, Verizon, AT&T, Lenovo, the New York State Department of Public Service and several law firms.
The symposium is free to students and professors and open to the public. First-year law student Jennifer Holtz, who is also president of the newly formed Communications Law & Policy Society, says the symposium has strong ties to many fields of study, which makes it applicable to students, professors and practitioners from numerous disciplines.
"Communications law involves not only facets of law, but also media studies, information technology policy and public administration," says Holtz. "We wanted to organize an interdisciplinary program that would provide a cross-section of students an opportunity to both learn about the field and engage in a dialogue with practitioners about emerging communications technologies.
