University College Marketing Department wins national awards

The marketing department at University College of Syracuse University has won six national awards in the 2006 University Continuing Education Association (UCEA) Marketing and Publications Awards Competition. These awards are given for excellence in marketing campaigns and publications produced by U.S. colleges and universities. University College (UC) collected more awards than any other organization in its category, which encompasses continuing education colleges with fewer than 25,000 students.


The awards are:



  • a gold award for a sign posted at three Onondaga Community College bus shelters: "Make SU Your Next Stop"--this won in the "Single Outdoor, Transit or Other" category;


  • a silver award for UC's Fall 2005 advertising campaign, which included a series of print ads, billboards, radio and TV commercials, and a brochure promoting the "Power of the SU Degree"--this won in the "Mixed Media Campaign" category;


  • a silver award for a "Part Time" publicity campaign conducted during the Syracuse Crunch season--the campaign included a contest in which the winner could be a part-time announcer, coach or general manager for the Crunch and a giveaway of T-shirts and megaphones that matched the rinkside "Go SU . . . Part Time" banner; this entry won in the "Publicity Campaign" category;


  • a silver award for a brochure produced for the English Language Institute, outlining programs for international students and containing a pocket to hold an application form--this won in the "Brochure-3 or more colors" category;


  • a silver award for a new brochure introducing the new Summer Dance Intensive for experienced young dancers--it opens to a poster for display at regional ballet studios; This won in the "Brochure-1 or 2 colors" category; and


  • a bronze award for an ad that first appeared in the Post-Standard's 2005 pictorial review in the last paper of 2005--the ad featured two sisters who are members of the Onondaga Nation and UC graduates; this won in the "Single Ad-3 or more colors" category.


    The awards are being presented at the UCEA's annual conference in San Diego April 9-12. The Best in Show award winner will also be announced and presented at a conference luncheon. University College will have four representatives at the conference: Interim Dean Bea Gonzalez, Associate Dean Robert Colley, Associate Dean Geraldine de Berly and Rosemary Kelly, associate director of student administrative services and manager of UC's bursar and registration office.


    UCEA was founded in 1915 and is the leading professional organization for college and university continuing and professional education, with 430 institutions and more than 200 members in 16 countries.


    "Once again, UC has proven it can compete with the best in the country and emerge a winner," says Colley, who directs the marketing department. "This year was the best year yet for us in the UCEA awards competition, and we are especially proud of the fact that all of our creative work is done in-house, rather than through outside agencies. University College is truly outstanding when it comes to creativity in marketing."


    The award-winning UC team includes designers Elizabeth Serafini and Catherine Wenthen; writers Lois Gridley and Mary Beth Horsington; associate director of marketing Laurie McCarthy; production coordinator Karen Nadolski; Web content manager Martha Zvonik; administrative specialist Allison Vincent; and office assistants Mary Hartley and Jill Tanner.
