Syracuse University's Pulse and Malmgren Concert Series will co-sponsor a five-day-long campus and community residency by highly acclaimed a cappella group The Concord Ensemble, April 5-9. The group will appear in a free concert April 9 at 4 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public; no tickets are required. Free parking will be available in Irving Garage.
"We are delighted that the Malmgren gift can serve to support the music arts across campus and in the community," says Thomas Wolfe, dean of Hendricks Chapel. "This is at the heart of the intended purpose of the Malmgren series."
The Concord Ensemble came together in 1996 as a group of friends interested in singing early music and exploring its performance practice. A versatile sextet of men's voices dedicated to performing and recording a variety of music ranging from Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque to contemporary vocal works, the group has received numerous accolades for its work.
The ensemble gained international attention when it won the grand prize in the Early Music America/Dorian Records recording competition and its debut recording, "The Victory of Santiago: Voices of Renaissance Spain," garnered a five-star distinction from Goldberg Magazine. The ensemble consists of baritone Aaron Cain; tenors Daniel Carberg, Pablo Cora and Lincoln Hanks; countertenor Paul Flight; and bass-baritone Scott Graff.
During their residency, The Concord Ensemble will work on campus with the
Hendricks Chapel Choir and University Singers, as well as in the community with students from Nottingham and Manlius Pebble Hill schools, and with the Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church's Schola Cantorum (community choir).
SU's Pulse was developed nearly 10 years ago as a joint initiative between the College of Visual and Performing Arts and the Division of Student Affairs to influence student culture in positive ways by positioning the arts and cultural events more prominently as part of the student experience.
