For the third event of its 2005-06 Convocation Lecture series, "Legal Realities Behind Media Headlines," and as part of its new Angela S. Cooney Distinguished Lecture Series, the Syracuse University College of Law will host Catherine Crier, host of the award-winning Court TV "Catherine Crier Live" program, March 23 at 11:45 a.m. in Hendricks Chapel. Her lecture, "Fact or Fiction -- Trying Cases in the Press," will address the issues surrounding media coverage, accurate reporting and public opinion. An Emmy, duPont-Columbia and Gracie Allen Award-winning journalist and the youngest state judge to ever be elected in Texas, Crier joined Court TV's team of anchors in 1999. Her third and most recent book, "Contempt: How the Right is Wronging American Justice" (Rugged Land, 2005) reveals the attempts to usurp the power of the federal judiciary through political and religious intimidation and manipulation. Crier's two previous books, "The Case Against Lawyers" (Broadway, 2002) and "A Deadly Game: The Untold Story of the Scott Peterson Investigation" (Regan Books, 2005), were both on The New York Times best-seller list.
Prior to her accomplished career in television journalism, Crier presided over the 162nd District Court in Dallas County, Texas, as a state district judge.
A native of Dallas, Crier earned a bachelor's degree in political science and international affairs at the University of Texas. She received a Juris Doctor in just two and a half years from Southern Methodist University School of Law.
