Accounting students in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University will offer free income tax preparation assistance to low-income taxpayers who have simple tax forms. The service, sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, is provided in partnership with more than 20 local organizations and is led by United Way of Central New York.
"Tax season is a difficult time for everyone," says Mitch Franklin, assistant professor of accounting in the Whitman School. "The VITA program is a great way for our students to give back to the community. It helps the students prepare for future careers, and it helps the city's taxpayers at the same time."
Whitman accounting students will offer their services at Danforth Magnet School. Other volunteers are providing the service at the Franciscan Center, Huntington Family Center and the Sidney Johnson Vocational Center.
