Syracuse University's Pulse and Syracuse Opera, a Pulse community partner, will sponsor a free preview of Gilbert and Sullivan's classic opera "H.M.S. Pinafore" March 2 at 12:30 p.m. in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium, Crouse College. This is the second time Syracuse Opera has performed a preview on the SU campus. The first occurred in October with the preview of season opener "Tosca."
The event is free and open to the public; no tickets are required. Parking is available in Irving Garage. The first 40 cars will receive free parking. Patrons should alert the parking attendant that they are attending the opera preview.
An opera in two acts, "H.M.S. Pinafore" is set in 1878 on the quarterdeck of the ship H.M.S. Pinafore. The opera was Gilbert and Sullivan's fourth collaboration and first blockbuster hit. Today it is still one of the duo's most popular operas. "H.M.S. Pinafore" is filled with memorable tunes including "We Sail the Ocean Blue," "I'm Called Little Buttercup," "Fair Moon, to Thee I Sing" and "He is an Englishman."
