Jonathan Ryan, the second-prize winner in the 2005 Arthur Poister Competition in Organ Playing, will perform a recital of organ music at Syracuse University's Hendricks Chapel Sunday, Feb. 26, at 4 p.m. The concert, sponsored by Hendricks Chapel's Malmgren Concert Series, is free and open to the public.
This is the Malmgren Series' third annual "Rising Star" concert, designed to feature outstanding concert organists who are just beginning their performing careers. Ryan is completing his master's degree at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. He is also director of music and choirmaster at St. Anne Roman Catholic Church in Rochester. His concert will include music by J.S. Bach, Louis Vierne, Maurice Durufle, Herbert Howells, Petr Eben and Charles Tournemire.
The Malmgren Concert Series is made possible by a generous gift to Hendricks Chapel from alumna Esther Malmgren '42. The free Sunday afternoon concerts, held throughout the year, feature a variety of music but focus especially on the organ, Malmgren's favorite instrument.
