Anthony Callisto has been named deputy director of SU's Department of Public Safety (DPS). Callisto has begun working part-time at SU until August, when he will retire from his current duties as chief deputy sheriff in the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office.
As deputy director of public safety, Callisto will be second-in-command, reporting to Director of Public Safety Marlene Hall.
"Tony's administrative background, scholarship and professional reputation will bring fresh and interesting perspectives to DPS as well as the campus community," says Hall. "We look forward to his leadership."
Callisto's 24-year career includes 12 years in an executive role. Reporting directly to the sheriff, Callisto managed a staff of nearly 300 deputy sheriffs for the past nine years and was responsible for the development and management of annual budgets of more than $40 million. He streamlined management operations in the Sheriff's Office; developed an overtime management system that has saved Onondaga County millions of dollars over the past seven years; and was closely involved in the development, design and installation management of advanced surveillance technology and security systems for the Onondaga County Justice Center, the Onondaga County Criminal Court House and the Hillbrook Juvenile Detention Facility.
Additionally, Callisto, who holds a master's degree in public administration from the Maxwell School, has more than five years' experience as an adjunct college instructor, teaching six different criminal justice courses for Columbia College.
