In October, Syracuse University College of Law third-year students and roommates Lindsey Duerst and Angela Cruz devised a creative way to raise funds for the American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina relief effort by organizing a campus-wide donation drive in which participants who donated $10 received a specially designed T-shirt in return for their charity. Cruz, a New Orleans native, and Duerst felt they needed to give back in the wake of the tragedy.
Their hard work and creativity has paid off. Working with Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE), a group Duerst belongs to that gives students the opportunity to apply business knowledge gained in the classroom to solve real-world problems, the students surpassed their goal of $10,000 and raised $10,522.12 for the Red Cross.
"The ability of these two women to energize and mobilize the entire Syracuse University campus for the Katrina relief effort is truly remarkable," says Hannah Arterian, dean and professor of law. "I know that they will bring the same passion and commitment to their professional lives after law school and have a great impact on our society."
