Student Babak Najafi died of natural causes

December 06, 2005

The Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office has informed Syracuse University that the cause of death for SU student Babak Najafi, 18, was coronary arterial sclerosis.

Emergency medical personnel, responding to a 911 call, found Najafi unresponsive at his Day Hall room Sunday afternoon. He was declared dead at the scene.

Najafi was a first-year psychology major from Pomona, N.Y.

Many of his friends gathered late this afternoon at Hendricks Chapel to reflect and to interact with each other and with counselors who were on hand.

Counseling support for those affected by Najafi's passing is available from the Division of Student Affairs Counseling Center (443-4715), Hendricks Chapel (443-2901) and the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (443-1087).

Information on funeral arrangements is not available at this time. A campus memorial service will be planned for early next semester.
