The Executive Committee of Syracuse University's Board of Trustees today announced its position on the ongoing debate among students and faculty regarding actions taken by Chancellor Nancy Cantor pertaining to the operations of HillTV.
The Executive Committee has resolved that:
- The University Hearing Board has concluded appropriately that HillTV violated Section 3 of the Code of Student Conduct and that present and future sanctions and restrictions are necessary in order for HillTV to be re-established;
- Chancellor Cantor acted appropriately in the actions she undertook regarding HillTV and she did so as a matter of both necessity and urgency;
- HillTV is now required to satisfy the terms and conditions of the University Hearing Board decision including, but not limited to, adopting a new name and establishing a "Committee on Cultural Competence" to insure that Section 3 of the Code of Student Conduct is complied with in all respects; and
- the administration of Syracuse University will facilitate in every way possible the re-establishment of a successor student operation in keeping with the sanctions and requirements of the HillTV Hearing Board.
The committee also noted that it hopes the unfortunate and divisive issues regarding HillTV have provided an opportunity for reflection, discussion and learning regarding complex matters challenging not just the University community but also the nation as a whole.
