Babak Najafi, 18, a first-year psychology major from Pomona, N.Y., was found dead in his Day Hall room Sunday afternoon. His death does not appear suspicious, according to an initial assessment from the Syracuse Police Department. The cause of death has not been released, pending the medical examiner's report.
Two friends found Najafi in bed and unresponsive at about 3 p.m. Sunday. Following a call to 911, emergency personnel from Rural/Metro Medical Services and Syracuse University Ambulance responded to Day Hall along with Syracuse Police and SU Public Safety officers. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"I am deeply saddened to learn of Babak's death," said Chancellor Nancy Cantor. "On behalf of the Syracuse University community, I extend our most profound sympathies to his family and friends during this most difficult time."
"It is with a sense of loss that I learned of Babak Najafi's death," said Barry L. Wells, senior vice president and dean of student affairs. "During such tragic times, I want to assure those who knew and loved Babak that there are many people at Syracuse University who stand ready to offer comfort, help and assistance in any and every way possible."
Counselors from the Division of Student Affairs Counseling Center, Hendricks Chapel chaplains and Office of Residence Life staff met with Day Hall residents Sunday night.
For others who need assistance, the Division of Student Affairs Counseling Center (443-4715), Hendricks Chapel (443-2901) and the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (443-1087) are available.
A gathering of reflection will take place at 4 p.m. Monday in Hendricks Chapel.
Information on memorial and funeral arrangements will be announced once finalized.
