The New York Higher Education Support Center (HESC) for SystemsChange, in the School of Education at Syracuse University, has established 13 online forums to support the work of statewide Learning Communities.

The Learning Communities are the higher education faculty, parents, teachers and support organizations at the state and national levels that compose the NY-IDEA Partners. The 13 communities were formed as part of the 2005 Conference on Inclusive Schools and Communities for Children and Youth: Building Partnerships for the Future.

The online forums allow current and new members of the learning communities to communicate and work toward the specific goals of each community. To use the forum, members should register at
http://www.systemschange.syr.edu/forums.

The 13 online communities are focused on the following issues:

  • cisproportionality
  • development of inclusive schools
  • early childhood
  • family and school collaboration
  • inclusive adolescent (secondary) education
  • inclusive elementary education
  • inclusive teacher preparation
  • leadership
  • post secondary
  • reauthorization of IDEA and No Child Left Behind
  • teacher recruitment and retention
  • transition planning
  • universal design for learning

New York Higher Education Support Center for SystemsChange at SU's School of Education is an initiative of the Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID) within the New York State Education Department. The HESC was established at SU in 2001 as an outgrowth of the NY Partnership for Statewide Systems Change.
The Web site provides additional information about the groups involved in the common goal of promoting excellence and quality of life for all students and are supported by the Task Force on Quality Inclusive Schooling, Special Education Training and Resource Centers (SETRC), the Regional School Support Centers (RSSC), State Improvement Grant (SIG) Teams, teacher centers, parent centers and other organizations.
