Syracuse University is now working to arrange class schedules and local housing for 300 students from Tulane and other universities affected by Hurricane Katrina. On Aug. 31, the University announced the offer to enroll these students temporarily, and since then more than 300 inquiries have been received. Although the University can no longer accept new inquiries from affected students because of enrollment capacity, administrators are working to ensure that the academic and housing needs of these first 300 students are being met, along with the needs of SU's regular students.
As of Sept. 2, SU's study abroad facilities in London, Madrid, Strasbourg and Florence have also neared maximum capacity. On Aug. 31, SU announced the offer for hurricane-affected students to attend SU's overseas centers tuition-free, with students being responsible for transportation, lodging, food, special course fees and other personal expenses. A number of inquiries were received and the University is now working to accommodate as many students as possible in the centers abroad.
Additionally, the SU College of Law will play a role in the relief effort. The college has notified the American Association of Law Schools and American Bar Association that it will, for the fall semester, take any Tulane or Loyola New Orleans students who have paid tuition to their home school and are in good standing. Details are still being worked out; more information is available by contacting the College at (315) 443-9580 or at ficarra@law.syr.edu.
The University's grant preparation and research facilities remain available to faculty members and graduate students from affected colleges and universities.
Those interested should contact Gina Lee-Glauser at (315) 443-1824.
In addition to its previously announced relief fund and other efforts, SU is exploring other avenues to assist affected institutions and their communities, possibly including the organization of teams of SU students, faculty and staff to help restore campus facilities.
SU will use its News Web site (http://sunews.syr.edu) and other means to provide updates on the situation as it progresses.
