The School of Education's Study Council at Syracuse University has partnered this year with the New York State School Boards Association to present the 29th Annual Education Law Conference, to be held Tuesday, Aug. 9, from 8 a.m.-3:15 pm at the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel & Conference Center. Registration is required.

The Education Law Conference is designed to help education professionals-in particular school board members, superintendents, administrators, school attorneys, school faculty and education students, and the education media-to keep abreast of significant developments in law in a variety of areas relevant to public schools. Each year, the conference invites prominent attorneys and administrators in the field of education law and other fields that have an impact on education to share their insights regarding the latest trends in the application of law to educational issues.

The featured speaker at this year's conference is Jay Worona, general counsel for the NYS School Boards Association. Worona and attorney Benjamin J. Ferrara (Ferrara, Fiorenza, Larrison, Barrett & Reitz, P.C.), who is highly respected in the field of education law and a longtime conference advisor, will invite audience participation as they review a variety of hypothetical law cases; Worona also will discuss current legal trends in his presentation, "School Law Update '05."

In addition, the following topics will be covered:

• Employee Misconduct-"Spotting the Smoke Before the Fire," presented by Henry Sobota (Ferrara, Fiorenza, Larrison, Barrett & Reitz, P.C.) and David M. Pellow (Law Offices of David M. Pellow);




• Special Education-"The New and Improved IDEA: Implications for Administrators and School Board Members," presented by Susan T. Johns (Ferrara, Fiorenza, Larrison, Barrett & Reitz, P.C.);



• Developments-Update on Student Misconduct and Student Behavior Codes, presented by Donald E. Budman (Ferrara, Fiorenza, Larrison, Barrett & Reitz, P.C.)



• Employment and Labor Relations Update-Federal and New York State Developments, presented by Dennis G. O'Hara (O'Hara & O'Connell, P.C.).

The New York State School Boards Association serves as the statewide voice of more than 700 school boards of education. The association provides current information and advice on matters affecting school boards and cooperates with other educational and related organizations in promoting excellence in education.

The Study Council at SU is a membership organization of more than 160 Central New York school districts. More than 2,000 school district personnel participate annually in council services, including special access to topical conferences for educators, issues-related seminars, collaborative research and development, and grant writing assistance.
