This week, Syracuse University College of Law welcomes its 110th first-year law class. Some 266 students arrived on Aug. 22 for a week-long orientation program that included a formal convocation with Chancellor Nancy Cantor and Melanie Gray, LAW'81, an alumna member of the University's Board of Trustees, as well as roundtable discussions and lectures by a variety of alumni and internationally recognized legal experts, and small group meetings with alumni and faculty.
"We are very excited about the diverse backgrounds and academic strength of this incoming class," says Dean Hannah R. Arterian. "With our outstanding faculty, complemented by nine new members and acclaimed visiting professors, we are ready to launch into a very promising academic year."
Entering students come from 37 states, Canada and Korea. While the average student age is 24, the range in age spans more than 20 years. Nearly 50 percent of first-year students are female; while students of color account for 22 percent. More than 70 percent of the students are non-New York State residents, representing 154 undergraduate colleges and universities.
"This is the beginning of a lifelong relationship with the Syracuse University College of Law," says Peter D. Carmen, LAW'91, a partner with Mackenzie Hughes LLP and president of the Syracuse University Law Alumni Association. "Each student will benefit from the world-class professors who balance theory and practice to truly prepare them to enter the professional world with confidence."
