When Syracuse University placed a call last week for help in housing the visiting students from institutions affected by Hurricane Katrina, the local community responded with overwhelming generosity.
In the past week, SU has received more than 200 offers of short-term housing, more than 120 offers of long-term housing (both rentals and sponsored housing) and more than 100 offers of donations of household items. Administrators determined today that the affected students' needs for housing and household items have been met and no further offers are necessary at this time.
"The magnitude of the response from the Syracuse area has been outstanding and is a real testament to how a disaster miles from home can be taken personally and acted upon locally," says the Rev. Thomas V. Wolfe, dean of Hendricks Chapel. "We are grateful to everyone who has joined us in this effort."
Hundreds of students and parents from Tulane, Loyola, the University of New Orleans and other colleges and universities contacted SU following the University's offer of help in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. University College has enrolled 90 undergraduate and three graduate visiting students on a
temporary basis from affected institutions. SU's College of Law has enrolled six visiting students, and SU's Division of International Programs Abroad is working with 81 applicants to place them in study abroad opportunities.
Additionally, three faculty members from affected institutions have accepted SU's offer of research and grant application support.
