Syracuse University will host a memorial for alumnus and former student government leader Jamal J. James '01. James, a drama major in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, was president of the Student Association and was involved in several student groups and activities.
James' life will be celebrated and remembered as part of Coming Back Together 8, SU's reunion program for Latino and African American alumni. A public service in James' memory will be held Sept. 16, at 2:30 p.m., in Hendricks Chapel. For more information, call (315) 443-2902.
While at SU, James was devoted to a variety of student activities. In addition to his work as leader of student government, he volunteered in support of the University's $370-million Commitment to Learning Campaign; worked with the Office of Multicultural Affairs and other offices in the Division of Student Affairs; and launched an effort to bring Neighborhood Watch to SU's off-campus students. He served on SU's Alumni Board from 2002-04. James was a native of Bloomfield, Conn. After his graduation from SU, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in theater, where, like at SU, he was known for his warmth, humor and radiant smile. He is survived by his parents, Marva E. and Joseph A. James, three grandparents, his sister and three brothers.
Alumni Relations is leading an effort to place a permanent memorial paver in the Orange Grove in honor of James; contributors to date include the SU Alumni Board, Vice President for Institutional Advancement Lil Breul O'Rourke '77, Senior Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs Barry L.
