Tim Mahar '95 has been named executive director of alumni relations at Syracuse University. Mahar will report directly to Donald C. Doerr '85, LAW'88, assistant vice president of alumni relations. His primary responsibilities will include working with staff and volunteers to provide opportunities for alumni to become engaged with the University through the powerful medium of the arts. His goal will be to showcase the breadth and diversity of SU's vast arts resources and programs and to help ensure that alumni clubs have the opportunity to offer well-balanced programming.
The effort will be nationwide initially, expanding to reach alumni globally. SU has more than 225,000 alumni living in more than 150 countries.
"Tim's extensive background in external relations in the College of Visual and Performing Arts and his very successful track record of engaging alumni through the arts programs have provided him with the skills necessary to be involved in programmatic outreach," Doerr says. "We feel that his skills and talents will be an asset to help the Office of Alumni Relations reach its goals."
VPA Dean Carole Brzozowski credits Mahar with reestablishing connections to the college's 27,000 alumni. "I am so proud of Tim's accomplishments and the way that the University recognizes his good work with the College of Visual and Performing Arts," she says. "Tim is one of the most creative, inventive and interesting people on campus. His work in development has helped the college realize new programs in New York and Los Angeles, as well as substantial new funding, including the recently announced Billy Joel Fellowships in Composition. We look forward to taking our highly successful alumni program to the next level and sharing Tim with the entire SU community."
Mahar has a bachelor's degree in speech communication from VPA and has served as the college's associate director and director of development. He was named assistant dean for external relations at VPA in 2002. In 2004, he received the Rising Star Award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education's (CASE) Mid-Atlantic Region. An accomplished actor, he has worked extensively in radio and television, including the lead role in the short movie "Night Sweats." He serves on the boards of The Institute of a Now Culture (ThiNC), Partners in Arts Education and the Syracuse International Film and Video Festival.
