Syracuse University's Department of Mathematics in The College of Arts and Sciences will host its annual Sonia Kovalevsky Festival on Saturday, Oct. 22.
The event gives local high school math and science teachers the opportunity to bring female students to campus for a day of interaction with some of the University's top female professors in mathematics, physics and engineering.
The event, named after the first woman Ph.D. in mathematics, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and begins in the Carnegie Library Reading Room. Parking is available in the Q3 parking lot.
Workshops will include "Making Everyday Access-Control Decisions with Logic" by Susan Older of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; "The Magic of Electrostatic" by Alessandra Di Credico of the Department of Physics; "Biometrics: Recognition of Humans Through Faces" by Lisa Osadciw and Yanjun Yan of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; "Primes" by Maritza Branker of the Department of Mathematics and "What Color is My Hat?" by Susan Cooper of the Department of Mathematics.
The festival is organized by Marjory Baruch, adjunct professor in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS), and is co-sponsored by ECS and the Technology Alliance of Central New York. For more information, call Carolyn Behm in the Department of Mathematics at 443-1472.
