On Saturday, June 25, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., the Chase-Pitkin Home and Garden Center in DeWitt, 6797 East Genesee St., will host a demonstration of the Zwislocki Ear Muffler (ZEM), a hearing-protection device invented by Syracuse University Professor Emeritus Josef Zwislocki.
The demonstration, which is free and open to the public, will allow people to use sample ZEMs while operating a leaf blower, showcasing how the ZEM muffles loud sounds effectively while allowing regular speech to be heard at its normal volume-without batteries, electronics or bulky sound insulation.
The device is manufactured and marketed by Rochester-based SensGard LLC, the start-up firm that bought the ZEM patent from SU. SensGard founders Rob DiNardo and Greg Post will conduct demonstrations and be available for interviews. Zwislocki, who is a world-renowned auditory researcher, will also be available during the first hour of the demonstration.
