Marvin Druger, a professor of biology and science teaching and chair of the science teaching department in Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences, recently authored a collection of children's poetry titled "Strange Creatures & Other Poems." The 112-page paperback, which is also illustrated by Druger, was published by Druger on the Lake.
Druger's poetry aims to stimulate readers to reflect on everyday life experiences and encourage people to write their own poems. The book, which also contains a few submissions by his grandchildren, includes blank pages at the back for readers to add their own poetry. It is now available for purchase at the SU Bookstore.
Druger recently co-edited a book on college science teaching titled "Teaching Tips: Innovations in College Science Teaching," published by the National Science Teachers Association Press. Druger also co-edited the Oct. and Nov. 2004 issues of School Science & Mathematics, which focused on college science teaching.
Druger, who is celebrating his 50th year of science teaching this year, earned a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1961. He has taught at SU since 1962 and has been recognized as a Meredith Professor, SU's highest honor for teaching excellence. He has taught more than 40,000 students and has been president of three national organizations, including the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the largest science education organization in the world. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native has been awarded several honors, including the 2000 Robert H. Carleton Award for National Leadership in the Field of Science Education, the highest award given by the NSTA.
