Illustrator Charles Santore will speak at Syracuse University's Shemin Auditorium on Dec. 1 at 12:15 p.m. Shemin Auditorium is located in Shaffer Art Building. This event is free and open to the public.
Santore's work has appeared in Redbook, Ladies' Home Journal, Cosmopolitan, National Geographic and Esquire. His work has also appeared on countless record and book jackets and in advertising for major agencies and institutions. Some of his most well known works are the many celebrity portraits he has done for TV Guide covers. He is also a noted children's book illustrator who recently authored and illustrated "William the Curious, Knight of the Water Lilies," an original fairy tale.
Santore graduated from the Museum School of Art (now the University of the Arts) in 1956. One of his early assignments was for the Saturday Evening Post. Since then, he has garnered many prizes, including the prestigious Hamilton King Award from the New York Society of Illustrators and a gold medal from the New York Society of Publication Designers.
Santore's illustrations have been in numerous museum exhibitions including the "200 Years of American Illustration" at the New York Historical Society, a solo exhibition at the Brandywine River Museum and in the "Myth, Magic and Mystery" exhibition organized by the Chrysler Museum. His illustrations are part of the permanent collections of the Brandywine River Museum, Chadds Ford, Pa., The Free Library of Philadelphia, New York City's Museum of Modern Art, the US Department of the Interior and many private collections.
His lecture is sponsored by the visual communications department in SU's School of Art and Design.
