As students begin to consider their options for housing for next fall, Syracuse University's Office of Orientation and Off-Campus Programs will present its seventh-annual Off-Campus Student Housing Fair, which will aim to help students make a smooth transition to off-campus life.
The housing fair will be held from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, at the Underground in the Hildegarde and J. Myer Schine Student Center. The Housing Fair is designed to provide students considering an off-campus move for the 2008-09 academic year with access to the resources, information and encouragement to take advantage of the many opportunities for living in the neighborhoods adjacent to the SU campus, as well as an understanding of their responsibilities as community members. This includes, but is not limited to, information about the types of housing available, services and resources available to assist students in making the transition to off-campus living, and opportunities to become more involved in the community.
"Safety and cost are two important issues we will discuss at the fair," says Laura Madelone, director of SU's Office of Orientation and Off-Campus Programs. "In addition, students need to know their rights as tenants before they sign a lease. The housing fair has become a vital tool in helping students to understand their community and responsibilities while residing at off-campus locations."
Last year, the Off-Campus Student Housing Fair gave 275 students an opportunity to meet local landlords and learn about properties available, in addition to using resources for off-campus life. The Office of Orientation and Off-Campus Programs will offer giveaways and prizes as part of the fair.
