Elizabeth Lisle, a Syracuse University senior majoring in surface pattern design in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, has created the design for the new SU inauguration banner. The banner will be used to honor the inauguration of 11th Chancellor and President Nancy Cantor on Nov. 5.
The inauguration banner has a background of Syracuse orange with a path of multicolored blocks?each corresponding to a different college within the University in the order of its founding. A wreath similar to the University's seal encircles an image of the Earth, symbolizing SU's impact in the local community and worldwide.
The banner stretches 42-by 58-inches. Noted Camillus, N.Y., quilt maker Jeanne Riley, assistant to Dean Mark Robbins in the School of Architecture, stitched the satin design onto the orange cotton-blend fabric.
After the inauguration celebration, the banner will become part of the University's archival collection. Chancellor Cantor's Nov. 5 inauguration includes a free, public ceremony at the Carrier Dome, beginning at 10:30 a.m., followed by a boxed lunch on the turf. In the afternoon, the University will host a free, public inaugural symposium titled "Universities and Moral Responsibility: Respecting Humanity at Home and Abroad," which will bring together community members, SU faculty and other leading intellectuals in the Schine Student Center's Goldstein Auditorium from 1:30-5:30 p.m.
