University College will host the traveling domestic violence awareness display, "Silent Witness," Monday, Oct. 28 through Friday, Nov. 1, in the UC lobby, 700 University Ave. The display is a community service of University College and is open to the public.
The multi-panel exhibit represents five Central New York victims of domestic violence. Each panel shows the silhouette of a local woman who has lost her life due to domestic violence, and tells her story.
Vera House and the Junior League of Syracuse are bringing the display to local businesses throughout the next year to heighten awareness and provide education on this type of violence and its effect on individuals, a community, and a workplace. According to Vera House statistics, annual medical expenses from domestic violence injuries total from $3-5 billion nationally, resulting in an additional $100 million in lost wages, sick leave, absenteeism and reduced productivity. Additionally, their statistics estimate that 74 percent of victims are contacted and harassed by their abusers while the victims are at work.
The "Silent Witness" exhibit is a powerful display that aims to teach the symptoms of domestic violence abuse. The display offers multiple local resources for assistance.
