The Center of Excellence in Environmental Systems (CoE-ES), the New York Environmental Quality Systems STAR Center and the New York Indoor Environmental Quality Center (NYIEQ) will sponsor the third annual Environmental Systems Symposium in Syracuse Oct. 27 and 28 at the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel & Conference Center.

The symposium will highlight the interdisciplinary nature of built environments and urban ecosystems and their impact on human health and performance. Engineers, scientists, health professionals, entrepreneurs and others will present their latest research, discuss interactions among these dynamic systems, and explore future opportunities and synergies for research, technology transfer and product development.

Featured speakers will include Frank T. Princiotta, director of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Air Pollution Prevention and Control Division; Christopher Poythress, director of engineering of Space Systems International (United Technologies-Hamilton Sundstrand); Robin Herbert, associate professor at the Irving J. Selikoff Clinical Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine; and Richard Scheffe, leader of the Monitoring and Quality Assurance Group in the EPA's Office of Air and Radiation Emissions, Monitoring and Analysis Division.

The symposium will feature more than 30 technical presentations, including:

• A risk-based vulnerability assessment of commercial buildings to intentional introduction of chemical and biological agents;
  
  
• the intelligent control of built environmental systems for optimal evacuation planning;
  
  
• the commercialization of a patented air safety process and mold detection process;
  
• management strategies for reducing risks of exposure to indoor air pollutants;
  
• architectural acoustics; and
  
• a case study on the effect of suburban development on water quality.
