The Paul Robeson Performing Arts Co. will present "From Classical to Jazz to Blues and Back Again" on March 2 at 7 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel. Advance tickets are available in the Katherine Dunham Room, 2223 East Genesee St. and Fellows Ave.; tickets can also be purchased at the door. The program will look at more than a century of African-Americans' contributions to music and will feature jazz cellist and lecturer Karen R. Patterson, local performers and SU students.
Patterson, a gifted musician who has performed in Europe, South America and throughout the United States, began her cello studies in an experimental school at age 8. She went on to earn an undergraduate degree from Ohio University and a graduate degree from Antioch International University. She also specialized in German Language Studies at the Goethe Institute and cello with Gerhard Hamann at the Staatliche Hochschule fur Musik in Trossingen, Germany. In addition, she has played in the master classes of Mistislav Rostropovich and Janos Starker and has studied jazz improvisation with Keter Betts, the bassist for Ella Fitzgerald. As a teacher, she has mentored inner city youth in music programs throughout New Jersey, which she designed under a special initiative for Rutgers University. She has also been a member of the faculty at Manhattan School of Music in New York City.
