"The Benefits of Health Care" will be the topic of the 15th annual Herbert Lourie Memorial Lecture on Health Policy, to be given by David M. Cutler Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. in the Regency Ballroom of the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel & Conference Center. A reception will follow at 3:30 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public. Paid visitor parking is offered on a space-available basis in the Irving and University Avenue Garages.
Cutler is a health economist who teaches at Harvard University. His research focuses on the economics of health care, including measuring the health of the population and understanding how medical and non-medical factors influence health. Currently, he is examining the sources of cost growth in medical care, the productivity of the medical system and the relationship between public provision of medical care and private insurance coverage.
In his forthcoming book, "Your Money or Your Life: Strong Medicine for America's Health Care System" (Oxford University Press, 2004), Cutler argues that, contrary to popular opinion, the quality of health care in the U.S. has improved exponentially during the last 50 years. He says that the successes of the system suggest ways in which care might be improved, the system could be made easier to deal with and health care coverage could be extended to all Americans.
Herbert Lourie, M.D., was a distinguished neurosurgeon and professor of medicine in Syracuse. The Lourie Lecture is hosted annually by the Maxwell School's Center for Policy Research and the Central New York Community Foundation, Inc.
