Westcott Community Center to host SU's Kassam Oct. 19

With discussion of the role of women in Islam, the University Neighbors Lecture Series will host an Oct. 19, 3 p.m. lecture by Tazim Kassam, associate professor of religion in The College of Arts and Sciences. In "Gender in the Islamic World - Multiple Perspectives," Kassam will speak about how human rights activists, the media and feminists have been critical of religious and cultural norms in Islamic societies symbolized by the veil, and how many Muslim women have embraced the veil as a visible tool of self-assertion and defiance.

The lecture will be held at the Westcott Community Center, 826 Euclid Ave., and are open to the public. Tickets are $10 with discounts for students and seniors. Refreshments and the chance to meet the speakers are available after each lecture.
