An evening of the best short films made by students in the Art Media Studies Film Program at Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts will be presented Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. at Regal Carousel Center Cinema 19. This annual showcase, titled the Carol North Schmuckler New Filmmakers Showcase, is sponsored by the Syracuse International Film and Video Festival; Regal Carousel Cinema 19; and SU's College of Visual and Performing Arts, Department of Art Media Studies and Point of Contact Productions, an organization of the verbal and visual arts.
Films to be featured are: "Serving Solitude," directed by Zach Spira-Bauer; "Maribel," directed by Jules Medina; "Beehive," directed by Sarah Witt; "Switches," directed by Steve Mitchell; "Catharsis," directed by Devin Tanchum; "Cactus," directed by Albert Birney; "Cord," directed by Phil Davis ; "Spiral Bound," directed by Michael Dennis; "Hyphen," directed by Robert Lin; "Sealed," directed by Jennifer Brookes Morin; and "The Liars," directed by Nicholas Gurewitch. Gurewitch's "The Liars" has been selected as the winner of the 2004 Carol North Schmuckler New Filmmakers Showcase Award. "Cord" is the recipient of an honorable mention.
The films being screened were selected by a jury consisting of Joan Vadeboncoeur, entertainment editor of the Syracuse Post-Standard; Bill De Lapp, movie critic for the Syracuse New Times; and Huayu Xu, visiting professor of film in SU's Department of Art Media Studies. Tickets are $5, with the proceeds supporting student filmmaking awards. Many of the films use adult themes and language.
