On Oct. 19 at 8 p.m., Syracuse University faculty from the Rose, Jules R. and Sanford S. Setnor School of Music will be joined by the SU Wind Ensemble and the SU Symphony Orchestra to perform an evening of Aaron Copland's music as part of the yearlong celebration of American composers. The performance will take place in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium, located in Crouse College. It is free and open to the public.
The Wind Ensemble will perform Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man." Other Copland pieces to be performed include selections from "Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson" with soprano Janet Brown, affiliate artist in the Setnor School; Leonard Bernstein's piano transcription of "El Salon Mexico" with pianist Fred Karpoff, associate professor in the Setnor School; and "Appalachian Spring" with the SU Chamber Orchestra.
Copland is widely considered one of the premier American composers. Born in 1900, his musical works ranged from ballet and orchestral music to choral music and movie scores. SU's 'Year of the American Composer' continues throughout the academic year, with upcoming performances by the Corigliano String Quartet, the Setnor Faculty Jazz Ensemble, the Cassatt String Quartet and the SU Singers.
