To celebrate "Year of the American Composer," the Rose, Jules R. and Sanford S. Setnor School of Music at Syracuse University will present the Corigliano String Quartet, with guest composer John Corigliano, Oct. 23 at 8 p.m. The concert is in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium; it is free and open to the public.
The program will include "A Black November Turkey," arranged for the Corigliano Quartet; "String Quartet," composed for the farewell tour of the Cleveland Quartet; "String Quartet," by composer Jefferson Friedman; and "String Quartet no. 3," by Andrew Waggoner of the Setnor School. This piece was commissioned by Dickinson College in 2002 for the Corigliano Quartet.
The Corigliano Quartet was founded in 1996 and is named after the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer. The quartet is comprised of Michael Jinsoo Lim and Lina Bahn, who alternate on first violin; violist Melia Watras; and cellist Jeffrey Zeigler. In 1998, the quartet won the Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition; in 1999, they won both the First Prize and the Grand Prize at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition.
Internationally celebrated composer Corigliano won the Pulitzer Prize for his "Symphony No. 2" in 2001. He is Distinguished Professor of Music at Lehman College, City University of New York, and is on the faculty of The Julliard School. He is also a member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters.
