Syracuse University faculty musicians Michael W. Bull '77, G'83 and Edward Castilano will perform a "Percussion and Bass Faculty Chamber Music Recital" at 8 p.m. Oct. 29 in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium in SU's Crouse College. The concert, part of the Setnor Tuesday Concert Series, is free and open to the public.
The concert will feature works by Igor Stravinsky, Emmanuel Chabrier and Klaus George Roy. The musicians will be joined by a chamber music ensemble composed of colleagues from the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra (SSO) and the Setnor School of Music, College of Visual and Performing Arts. John M. Laverty, director of University Bands, will conduct the ensemble. Bull is a percussionist for the SSO and Castilano holds the position of principal bass for the SSO.
Bull has been a member of the SSO since 1979 and a member of the SU faculty since 1977, where he is director of the SU Percussion Ensemble. An SU alumnus, Bull is an active soloist and freelance percussionist/timpanist for many local and touring groups that perform in the Central New York area. In addition to his performing and teaching duties, Bull is the regional manager for the SSO, responsible for the orchestra's touring and run-out schedule.
Castilano is instructor of double bass at SU. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, he has participated in six seasons in the Spoleto Festivals in Italy and Charleston, S.C., where he has made several appearances with the Lincoln Center Chamber Players. He is a soloist for the Society for New Music and has performed with orchestras in Philadelphia, Rochester, Savannah and Spokane. He is also on the Hamilton College faculty.
