The work of three Victorian female artists-a photographer, a novelist and a poet-will be interpreted during a three-part presentation at Syracuse University on Oct. 15. The event will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the 1916 Room, located on the first floor of E.S. Bird Library, and is free and open to the public.
Sarah Russo, a doctoral student in the department of English in The College of Arts and Sciences, will speak on "Voice and Memory and Creative Vigor: Seeing Beyond the Focus in Julia Margaret Cameron's Religious Photographs."
Claudia Klaver, assistant professor of English, will present her lecture "Fallen Woman/Fallen Mother: Maternity, Sexuality, and the Body in Elizabeth Gaskell's 'Ruth.' "
Soprano Eileen Strempel, assistant professor in the Department of Fine Arts in The College of Arts and Sciences and assistant to the dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, will present a lecture-recital, "Voices of Desire: Libby Larsen's Setting of the Sonnets from the Portuguese," by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Sylvie Beaudette of the Eastman School of Music will accompany Strempel on the piano.
A reception will follow the presentation. This event, the second in the Syracuse University Library Fine Arts Department's 2003-04 Special Event Series, is co-sponsored by the Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music.
