Strodel, Freund announce details of Nov. 5 inauguration events

October 08, 2004

This letter, from Associate Vice President and Chief of Human Resources Neil B. Strodel and Vice Chancellor and Provost Deborah A. Freund, is reprinted here as a service to the University Community.

As you know, Syracuse University will inaugurate Chancellor and President Nancy Cantor on November 5. The participation of all members of the University community is welcomed and encouraged.

Your attendance at the inaugural ceremony-to be held in the Carrier Dome at 10:30 a.m., with a free, boxed lunch on the turf to follow-is a way to celebrate this historic event. Administrative departments may close for the occasion; faculty are encouraged to attend the event with classes that meet during any part of Friday morning. Also, graduate teaching assistants, full- and part-time instructors and others who hold Friday-morning classes, laboratories, discussion or recitation sections, and other instructional meetings are invited to join us at the Dome.

Your RSVP for the morning ceremony will help organizers plan the lunch on the turf; please visit http://soulofsyracuse.syr.edu if you are planning to join us. For questions about work or class schedules, staff should contact Roger Casanova at 443-5370; students, faculty, graduate teaching assistants and full- and part-time instructors should contact their deans' offices.

In the afternoon, the University will host a conversation on the inaugural theme, "University as Public Good: Exploring the Soul of Syracuse," in the form of a free, public symposium and art events that will link the SU and Central New York communities, with William Safire '51, HON'78; David Crane LAW'80; Aaron Sorkin '83; and others in a rich ensemble of intellectual leaders, scholars and artists. Members of the University community who can participate are encouraged to do so. More inaugural details will be announced in coming weeks.

As part of Chancellor Cantor's inaugural day, you can help launch the inaugural year activities involving faculty, staff, students and the community-and help start the University on its new and exciting path.

We are fortunate that Chancellor Cantor has chosen Syracuse University and we are confident that SU will thrive under her leadership. Please join us on November 5 as we welcome her warmly to our community.
