The Syracuse University Wind Ensemble and the SU Symphony Band will present a concert at 8 p.m. March 6 in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium in Crouse College. The concert is free and open to the public.
Featured will be guest trumpeter Jeffrey Stockham, who will perform Gil Evans' "Solea" with the Wind Ensemble. Stockham is well-known to jazz fans in the upstate New York region. A 1980 graduate of SU's College of Visual and Performing Arts and a 1982 graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Stockham has performed with numerous Central New York musicians, including Atlas, Gap Mangione, Danny D'Imperio's Boilermakers, the Stan Colella Orchestra, the Mario DeSantis Orchestra, Little Georgie and the Shufflin' Hungarians, Joe Salzano and the Blue Devils, the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Salt City Jazz Collective, the Central New York Jazz Orchestra and JazzBone.
Stockham has also played in bands for such stars as Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra Jr., Rosemary Clooney, Natalie Cole, Harry Connick Jr., Al Martino, Jimmy Cavallo, Leslie Gore and Shari Lewis. He has toured Europe and Africa with Chicago blues guitarist Jimmy Johnson and is a member of Thelonius Monk Jr.'s Monk on Monk big band, with which he has toured Europe, Israel and the United States. His current sextet, the Jazz Police, is a Central New York all-star ensemble composed of some of the region's top jazz musicians.
The SU Wind Ensemble, directed by John Laverty, director of University bands, will also perform works of Archer, Melillo, Whitacre, Ticheli and Walton. The SU Symphony Band, which is directed by Bradley P. Ethington, assistant director of University bands, will perform the works of Orff, Hanson and Mendelsohn.
